The International Day for the Girlchild has been marked with pomp and colour today in Kericho at the Kenya Highlands University, Ainamoi Sub County with rallying calls to action to equalize and strengthen opportunities for the Girlchild.
The event dubbed, ‘Invest in Girls Rights; Our Leadership, Our Wellbeing’, was organized by the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) consisting of 14 western, Nyanza and Rift Valley counties and was graced by H.E the First Lady Rachel Ruto and LREB Governor’s spouses flanked by host Governor H.E Dr . Erick Mutai, Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyongo, Siaya counterpart James Orengo and Busia Governor, Paul Otuoma, Kericho County Mp Beatrice Kemei and several Deputy Governors.
The stakeholders resolved the need to collaborate and mainstream issues identified as the triple threat to the girlchild consisting of Teenage pregnancies, HIV and gender-based violence.
Kericho Governor in his keynote speech promised that his administration would invest strategically in counselling the girlchild, to change the grim early pregnancy statistics in the county and the high prevalence of HIV infections in teenagers.
